EXCLUSIVE: Nigel Winterburn shares his starting XI for Arsenal’s Champions League final

There are few occasions in football that demand absolute clarity. The Champions League final is one of them.

For Arsenal, this is unfamiliar territory in the modern era; a moment built on years of progression, patience and belief under Mikel Arteta. Now, with the Premier League title already secured, attention turns fully to Europe and the opportunity to complete something historic.

Naturally, conversation has shifted towards team selection. Who starts, who misses out, and where Arteta may look to gain an edge against elite opposition.

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has now had his say.

Speaking exclusively to ReadArsenal via William Hill, who have written an Arsenal vs PSG Champions League final preview, Winterburn discussed a variety of topics, including the upcoming final, Mikel Arteta’s team selection for it, and much more.

Nigel Winterburn reveals his starting XI for Champions League final

“Here we go: Raya, Mosquera, Gabriel, Saliba, Calafiori, Rice, Lewis-Skelly, Odegaard, Saka, Gyokeres, Trossard.

I like Lewis Skelly in midfield. He is fresh, he is hungry, he takes the ball on the half turn and has played well since coming into the team. Odegaard is back and I think he gets the nod over Eze and his experience can help the team. But don’t rule out Eze or Martinelli having a big impact in the game. Mosquera looks like he will start right back and needs a massive game, but with Saliba next to him, he can play well.”

Nigel Winterburn’s Champions League final verdict

“I do now [fancy Arsenal] I have to say. Premier League was the one I wanted as was confident all season. Champions League is always difficult with two legs and playing teams at the right time. But now, with the Premier League in the bag, I do think Arsenal can go one further than ever before and bring home the champions League. It will be tough, it will be difficult, there will be tough moments and Arsenal will need to defend well. Stifle their attack and then look to counter attack well as we know their defence can be something for Arsenal to test. Clinical up front when chances come Arsenal’s way and they can win yes.”

For Arsenal, the task is now simple in theory, ruthless in execution.

The foundation is there. The belief is there. The opportunity is unmistakable.

As Winterburn outlines, it will come down to control in the decisive moments; discipline without the ball, and clarity when chances arrive.

History is within reach.

Now, it is about whether this team are ready to take it.

matchday.
