Arsenal have received a major William Saliba injury update after the defender decided against back surgery. The France international will instead begin a lengthy period of treatment and rest, with his absence expected to last several months.
According to L’Équipe, Saliba made the decision after consulting Arsenal. However, no exact return date can currently be set because his recovery will depend on how his back responds.
The 25-year-old had carried the problem through the closing months of Arsenal’s season. He also followed an adjusted training programme during the World Cup before the pain became too severe.
Saliba eventually left France’s semi-final defeat by Spain after 30 minutes. Initial reports suggested surgery could rule him out for four or five months, but Arsenal and the player have now chosen a different recovery plan.

Avoiding surgery may appear encouraging, but Saliba is still expected to miss the start of Arsenal’s title defence. He will also be unavailable for the Community Shield meeting with Manchester City on 16 August.
Mikel Arteta can use Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White or Jurriën Timber at centre-back. However, none offers the same combination of pace, strength and composure as Saliba.
The William Saliba injury could therefore influence Arsenal’s remaining transfer business. Arsenal have already considered a move for John Stones as possible cover, while Ezri Konsa has also attracted interest.
Arsenal will not rush Saliba back because of the chronic nature of the problem. A clear recovery date may only emerge once the defender begins treatment and responds to rest.
The decision removes the immediate risks linked to surgery. Nevertheless, Arteta must prepare to begin the season without one of his most important players.
